Anterior Cruciate ligament (ACL) Injury

Anterior Cruciate ligament (ACL) Injury

ACL is one of the most important stabilizing ligaments of the knee. It prevents the leg bone from slipping forward over the thigh bone. An ACL injury affects more than 200,000 people each year, affecting more people in 18-30 age group and slightly more in females.  When this injury occurs, it is the tear or sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament, which is a major ligament in the knee. The injury happens when a sudden movement causes the ligament to tear or sprain. Athletes have a higher risk of tearing their ACL because of the hard physical labour they put on their bodies. The symptoms include swelling, instability, and pain from the damaged knee.

Partially damaged ACL may not require surgical treatment and can be managed with rest, medicines and exercises. However completely damaged ACL may require arthroscopic repair or reconstruction. ACL repair may be indicated for fresh avulsion type of injury whereas reconstruction is required for all other types of ACL injuries.
